Biography

A Musical and Medical Education

Born in Brescia, Roberto Pinelli was drawn from an early age to both music and medicine, sensing a subtle affinity between the two. After graduating in Piano from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, he continued his musical studies in the United States, training in orchestral conducting with Maestro Seiji Ozawa at the Tanglewood Music Festival near Boston, Massachusetts. At the same time, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan and went on to specialise in Ophthalmology.

From the Eye to Refractive Surgery

The eye held a magnetic fascination for him, with its extraordinary ability to receive and decipher light. He therefore decided to train in refractive surgery in San Diego, California, with Professor Michael Gordon. On returning to Italy, he founded a vision institute in Brescia, which he successfully led for fifteen years.

In 2013, he founded the Switzerland Eye Research Institute (SERI) in Lugano, where he continued his research into the retina’s interaction with light and the use of photons in the treatment of vision disorders and keratoconus.

This research led to the development of the Lugano Protocol, a treatment approach for degenerative retinal conditions that combines photobiomodulation and nutraceuticals.

Research

Light as Therapy and as a Key

Through clinical observation, Pinelli began to notice that his eye treatments appeared to produce unexpected benefits elsewhere in the body. This led him to consider whether light might also be stimulating intracranial organs beyond the eye, prompting him to investigate the possibility further.

The clinical results that followed became the subject of a series of scientific publications and opened the way to new research in neuroscience. This work led him to focus on the pineal gland as the organ in which, according to his research, the vibrational message carried by light is perceived and translated into physiological instructions.

The Pineal Gland and a Regenerative Protocol

This marked the beginning of an area of investigation that soon became central to his research. From it emerged an integrative medicine protocol combining specific frequencies of light, sound and electromagnetic stimulation with highly purified plant-based nutraceuticals, with the aim of nourishing, decalcifying and stimulating the pineal gland.

In his patients, Pinelli has observed outcomes that include cellular regeneration, reduced calcification within the body and systemic rejuvenation. Today, alongside his work as a researcher and director of SERI Lugano, he is also an author and science communicator.

Q&A

Q&A 01

Many people call you “the surgeon who works with light.” What exactly does that mean?

Light is life. Through its vibrations, it created our planet and exists in complete harmony with it. Preserving or restoring human health through light is therefore the greatest achievement a surgeon can hope for, combining a non-invasive approach with power and vitality.

Q&A 02

As a neuroscientist, what is the focus of your research?

The therapeutic triad I have identified, consisting of light, sound vibrations and nutraceuticals, is primarily applicable to retinal tissue, but also produces beneficial effects in all the organs connected to it through energy meridians.

This approach is the result of research in which I have chosen to revisit knowledge that was once familiar to ancient medicine. I consider it essential to validate these ideas scientifically through the publication of peer-reviewed articles, meaning research evaluated by other experts in the scientific community. In this way, the ancient art of medicine can once again become an effective tool for preventing illness and restoring human health.

Q&A 03

Doctor, musician and orchestra conductor: how did such different passions come together?

In reality, making music and practising medicine are the same thing. We should remember that medicine originated as a sacred art, while music was originally a form of therapy. Later, composers developed written scores and the concept of counterpoint, but the earliest form of music we know was pre-liturgical and therefore vibrational.

When we think about it, music and medicine can coexist within a single idea: creativity in the service of health.

Q&A 04

Has your experience as a musician influenced the way you approach scientific research?

If I had never played, composed or conducted music, I am certain I would never have created anything in medicine either. Creativity is not confined to a single field; it is multidisciplinary.

In my experience, music has undoubtedly helped me work through some of the most challenging areas of medical research and achieve important results.
